BA3: Contextual Studies


Notes from the First Contextual Studies Session…
Our project for this term is to look into the relationships of different cultures within games and how they have progressed, evolved and see where they have come from. Here are some rough notes I took from the first CS session we had which just briefly went over the brief. Then I will post the notes that I took following on from our lecture on “cuteness”. 

Focus on relationships between east and west popular culture, do they cross over? Do they relate to each other & why?

Look at cultural differences and similarities between east & west.

Where does “stuff” come from?

Why does it exist?

Cultural and historical backgrounds.

Kawaii (cute) Lecture
We were given a lecture on the 15th of March on the subject of kawaii which literally translates as “cute”. 

Chinana = kawaii/cute.

Betty Bop is kawaii, seen in Japan in the 1930’s.

Raymond Peynets “Dream of Romance” is very kawaii (young lovers in paris)

On creating a character:
Appearance, culture/nationality/religion/style/class/wealth/occupation, physical features/age/body type.

Voice, tone, pitch, volume, speed, level of articulation.

 Movement, speed/ease/reflex/special skills.
