Asset #5 - Broken Tree Log/Stump
I am trying to give the impression of a
mysterious jungle temple environment, although I wont actually be building the
temple, its just a possible area surrounding it, as I stated in my learning
agreement. To further this impression I thought about adding an old tree
stump/log that has fallen and not been moved and has become entwined with the
environment because it’s been here so long. To begin the modeling process, here
are some visual references t hat I have found to help me take my ideas into
Maya.
I have decided I am probably going to
split asset #4 into multiple assets of a similar variety. For example, here is
the hollow log that I have made as a result from the reference images. This is how I made
asset #5 - a hollow wooden log.
I began by building a basic polygon
cylinder and measuring it up against my human scale for size. When I was happy
with the size I added in 5 edge loops fairly close together. I then selected
the top faces and extruded them upwards.
I then selected the top faces again and
extruded them inwards, then I selected the smaller inner faces and extruded
them once again.
With the inner faces selected I could
hit the W key and use my move tool to pull the faces down which would leave me
with a similar shape to the screen cap. All I did after this was manipulate the
verts so that the model looked more organic and not static.
To make the log hollow I extruded the
faces at either end of the log so that they were smaller but the same size at
either end. I then did another extrusion on one of the ends and pulled the
faces all the way to the other end. I then simply merged the verts and deleted
the hidden/extra faces so that the log appeared hollow.
Obviously this doesn’t look AMAZING
right now, it need’s textures, diffuse and normal maps and ambient occlusion
but I am happy with it looking organic :D
