BA5 Studio Project | Production #03

Doing Some Field Research - Creating Environments

Because the idea of this project is to create something interactive I thought it would be a good idea to spend some time watching how environments are built in Maya. My 3D projects so far have been static objects which do not sit in any particular space. By looking at how 3D environments are built I can begin to understand how I can create interactive assets that would work within them.

The first video I found when looking for environment tips was a 2 video series by Sean Spitzer who shows you how to use the paint tools in Maya to help create realistic environments. One thing I will say though is that he clarifies at the beginning of the videos that he is working high poly which I don’t want to do necessarily. I am including the videos because I learnt helpful tools :D

World of Level Design.com

After watching the previous video series I stumbled onto the website World of Level Design. It was perfect! I found a series made with the intent of modeling an indoor environment with chairs, tables, windows and walls/ceiling decoration.

Distorted Delirium is set in a museum therefore I'm focusing on indoor environments and asset creation.
I think one of the best things about this series of videos is the fact it talks to you about workflow and how to work cleanly and precisely. This way you know that the way you are creating your environment is well informed. I also picked up some incredibly helpful tips to use in Maya when creating my assets which will help me greatly with my project.

The series of videos is long so I wont post them all up here but you can use the link that I posted to watch them all.
