Asset #01 - Victorian Style Study Desk
The first asset for my study is going to be a Victorian
time period styled desk. It needs to have either a drawer or cupboard
attachment so that the player can open it and look inside for helpful items of
clues regarding gameplay.
In order to model this successfully I need to have
plenty of visual reference to ensure I get the correct look and feel of the
desk that I want.
Using these as image references plus being inspired by
the desks in Amnesia I was able to construct a desk I am happy with. The main
difference is that I wanted to create delicate and intricate handles for the
drawers and cupboard but when I tried to do this and keep a low poly count I
struggled to create the right organic shape I had envisioned so I stuck with
plain door knobs.
I showed the desk to Lothar in our 3D session yesterday
and he said that my mesh was nice and clean and that I was right to create the
drawers and cupboard door separately so that they could be animated in the
future for the player to open
and use. He suggested that I reduce the polys in the door knobs however because they are such a small
part of the structure and in game they will hardly be noticed. I originally had
sub divided the sphere 8 x 8 but I reduced it to half that and created new door
knobs at 4 x 4. Here is the final result.
